There’s far more ways you can consume your hemp protein than simply shaking it in water and drinking it. The unflavoured quality of hemp protein makes it ideal to be added to a variety of other foods. One of my favourites is to use it to make savoury pancakes. The easy to digest nature of hemp means it’s the best protein powder for turning delicious pancakes into something both nutritious and digestable.
One caveat. I would suggest you only add 10 – 20 g of protein at most to your pancake mix. At least remember that the pancake mix itself will contain a sizeable amount of protein, and double that if you add eggs to it. The general advice seems to be these days that the body can only absorb 30 g or so of protein in any one meal.
You can find pancake mix recipes quite easily on the web. I find it easiest to simply buy ready made pancake mix and add one or two scoops of my favourite hemp protein powder to it. From that point it’s simply a matter of following the instructions on the label.
A simple recipe for making savoury pancakes can be found here.
1. Preheat the oven to 140C, 275F, Gas Mark 1. Place the flour, salt, milk and egg in a large bowl and whisk until smooth and lump free. Preheat the oven to very low to keep the first lot of pancakes warm whilst you’re cooking the remainder.
2. Transfer the batter to a measuring jug.
3. Heat the oil in a frying pan until very hot, then pour most of it into a heatproof container, leaving just enough oil to coat the pan.
4. Pour in a little of the batter, tilting the pan to evenly cover the base with a thin layer. Fry over a moderate heat, shaking the pan gently so it doesn’t stick, until the underside is golden. This will only take 1-2 minutes.
5. Using a palette knife, turn the pancakes over and cook the other side until golden.
6. Transfer to an ovenproof plate, cover well with foil and place in the oven to keep warm whilst you repeat with the remaining batter.
So, in the above case, you would add your scoop of protein powder to the flour, stir until it’s evenly mixed, and then add the salt, milk, and egg and whisk. You wouldn’t need to add more than a scoop because the milk and egg will already contain perhaps 20g of protein.
Again I find it easiest to buy a ready made pancake mix. Sometimes these are sold in a bottle in which you just add water or milk, close the cap and shake. This type is the easiest to add your protein powder to.
As for filling, chopped vegetables of your choice in a suitable sauce. Again, you don’t want an excess of protein, so give the meat a rest. A little grated cheese sprinkled on the vegetables will be delicious though.
Bon Appetit!
